HOW MANY CAN YOU ANSWER YES TO?
- Both parents remained married.
- A father figure in the home.
- Access to private education.
- Access to a tutor if needed.
- Never had to worry about a cell phone being shut down.
- Never had to help Mom and Dad with the bills.
- An athletic scholarship was not needed to pay for college.
- Did not fear where your next meal was coming from.
Approximately ~73% of African American kids begin life at a disadvantage because too many dads are missing BY CHOICE.
The Critical Role of Dads in the Family – Below are stats for kids of all races without a father at home:
GROWING UP WITHOUT A DAD INCREASES THE RISK OF:
- Likelihood of emotional and behavioral problems like depression, anxiety, aggression, and delinquency.
- Higher involvement in delinquency, violent crime, and substance abuse.
- Difficulty developing a strong self-identity and self-esteem.
- Increased chances of associating with delinquent peers or engaging in impulsive and risky behavior, such as criminal activity, to cope or obtain resources.
- Lower grades and educational attainment.
- More risk-taking behaviors, such as substance abuse and early sexual activity.
- Struggles in forming healthy relationships, especially with male authority figures.
- A higher likelihood of experiencing economic disadvantages like food insecurity, housing instability, and inadequate healthcare.
However, the family structure does not guarantee future success or failure. Nine Presidents of the United States were raised by single mothers, proving the importance a Mom has in cultivating a positive and supportive environment.
ZERO SURPRISE WHO WAS DISADVANTAGED IN THE VIDEO
It hurt watching those black and brown kids fall behind as each question was asked. Their facial expressions showed pain and embarrassment. If anyone should be embarrassed, it’s their biological fathers!
ENGAGED FATHERS GIVE US ADVANTAGES – LUCK!
WARREN Buffett acknowledged on several occasions he was lucky – “I was born in the right country, and I was born white male, and all that sort of thing, and I had some lucky genes. So, I’ve had a lot of luck.”
Warren scored eight out of eight on the above questions, so indeed, he is lucky.
Those who benefit from a two-parent home probably do not realize how lucky we are. I count my blessings!
TO ME – ALL LIVES MATTER, INCLUDING BLACK LIVES!
SILENT NO MORE: HOW BLACK CELEBRITIES CAN BREAK THE STIGMA SURROUNDING ABSENT BLACK FATHERS!
If you saw the movie Apollo 13, you probably recall the line “Houston, we have a problem,” spoken by actor Tom Hanks, who portrays astronaut Jim Lovell when he alerts NASA that an oxygen tank exploded and caused a critical situation for the three astronauts. When Houston learned of a life-or-death PROBLEM, all hands worked to solve that problem.
Missing dads, especially in poor communities, is a life-or-death PROBLEM. But, the issue of missing fathers is seldom discussed, nor are real solutions identified. How often have you read about this topic or seen it on 60 Minutes, etc.? Have you heard the two front runners for the 2024 Presidential election, Trump and Biden, utter one word about 73% of black kids being born in a single-parent home? How about your church ministers? Have you heard them mention this topic?
If we are serious about closing the wealth, health, and education gaps between races in our country, we must, at the minimum, acknowledge: Houston, we have a problem – WE NEED ACCOUNTABLE FATHERS.
SHINING A LIGHT ON ABSENT FATHERS: BLACK CELEBRITIES CAN USE THEIR PLATFORM TO DRIVE POSITIVE CHANGE!
Most solutions to close the gaps between races address symptoms only {Welfare, Government Housing, Food Stamps, Elimination of SAT and ACT, etc.} These “solutions” have failed to transition people out of poverty or close the gaps in over 70 years.
The lack of responsible fathers taking accountability for their kids is a root cause of the poor performance of minorities in education and the high percentage of blacks in prison. Only by openly discussing this problem and creating a compelling reason to find real and effective solutions will we see the dream Martin Luther King gave his life for.
Bill Cosby was among the few, maybe only celebrities, to talk about the missing Dads in the black community. We need others, including President Barak Obama, VP Harris, Senator Corey Booker, Senator Tim Scott, Tyler Perry, Oprah Winfrey, and many more good and caring people (including you) to speak up and reverse this trend. Let’s make a real difference.
