DAD RAISED ME TO BE A MAN, NOT A BLACK MAN!

MY DAD – WILLIAM POWERS SR.

I was listening to Bloomberg Business News when they introduced the next guest – the CEO of a diversity firm. As I was cooking, I began to note his theme.

TO ACHIEVE DIVERSITY, SIMPLY LOWER YOUR STANDARDS?????

  • To increase the number of black students, you must recruit from lower-standard schools.
  • You must revise your job descriptions to lower the standards for hiring black candidates.

THE ABOVE PREMISE IS INSULTING, WRONG, AND HARMFUL!

Recently I started a Wednesday series titled: RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS. I write about people of all races and ages (from seven to 100). People who EXCEED THE STANDARDS. At the end of today’s short blog, I posted blogs on young blacks who achieved PERFECT scores on the SAT and ACT; black billionaires; and a rainbow of others who, through their perseverance and HARD WORK, became successful. Who never asked nor expected the standards to be lowered.

CONCLUSION – DAD RAISED ME TO BE A MAN, NOT A BLACK MAN!

The University of California schools suspended the usage of the ACT and SAT test scores because they believe black and brown students are too stupid to qualify for admission.  Harvard University is being sued for discrimination against Asian American students because they score too high on standardized tests, have superb GPAs, and dominate the fact-based admission process.  So our message to black and brown students “you poor little darlings, we will lower the standards because you are just dumb!”  Yes, I have a BIG problem with this.

Many Asian Americans score well on standardized tests and graduate top of the class for the EXACT reason Michael Jordan is considered one of the best basketball players. [Sorry, Jake, one of the best, NOT the GOAT].  HARD WORK!  Asian American students study almost ten times more than black students.  While too many black students, instead of studying, are chasing the very low odds dream of a professional sports career.  Ending the use of the SAT in college admissions won’t close the learning gap exposed by tests. It will delay the exposure, resulting in higher failure and dropout rates.

When Michael was cut from his high school basketball team, he picked his ego up and WENT TO WORK BY PRACTICING MORE!  He shot in the dark out of necessity and to improve his shooting!  Michael Jordan was the first and last in the gym his entire career! He worked for his greatness.

IF YOU WANT IT, GET OFF YOUR ASS AND WORK FOR IT!

Dad was the hardest working man I have known who I saw take care of his immediate family and many more.  He did not raise me to be the best black man I could be but the best man. I often failed but recalled his coaching to continuously improve by working harderI NEVER FAILED BECAUSE I WORKED TOO HARD!

Believe the words of a man who gave his very life so that this nation could be better:

WHAT SUBJECTS DO YOU WANT TO READ MORE ABOUT? WHAT QUESTIONS CAN I ANSWER? UNTIL NEXT TIME!
