On April 23, 2023, we lost a formidable role model when Harry Belafonte joined his good friend, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Mr. Belafonte was an iconic civil rights activist and leader. A man who risked his career and received numerous death threats so I and millions more could have a better life. He was a close friend and collaborator with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the fight for racial equality. And as you will see below could make the serious Dr. King- LOL. Something we all want from our friends.
Harry Belafonte is known as a trailblazing entertainer and civil rights activist, but his life began with a different kind of military service. Belafonte enlisted in the Navy during World War II and was a munitions loader on a ship in the Pacific theater. But despite his service to his country, Belafonte faced racism and discrimination during and after the war.
As a Black man in a segregated military, he was subject to discrimination and mistreatment. He was assigned to an all-Black unit and was often given menial tasks that had little to do with his training. He also witnessed firsthand the racism and violence American soldiers inflicted upon Japanese prisoners of war.
After the war, Belafonte returned to civilian life but found that the racism he had experienced in the military had followed him home. He could not find work as an actor or singer and was told by agents and producers that his skin color made him unsuitable for leading roles. He was forced to work as a janitor and dishwasher to make ends meet.
Despite these obstacles, Belafonte refused to be deterred. He continued to pursue his dreams of becoming an entertainer and eventually found success with his music and acting career. He quickly became a successful singer and actor, with hits like “The Banana Boat Song” and appearances in films like “Carmen Jones” and “Island in the Sun.” But he also used his platform to speak out against racism and injustice and became a crucial figure in the civil rights movement.
Today, Belafonte’s legacy as a pioneer in the entertainment industry and a leader in the fight for civil rights is undeniable. But it is essential to remember the challenges he faced as a Black man in America and the strength and resilience he demonstrated in overcoming them.
His story is a testament to the power of perseverance and the ability of individuals to create change in the face of adversity.
Belafonte was never content to entertain. He was deeply committed to the civil rights movement and used fame to further its goals. He financially supported the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which played a vital role in the sit-ins and freedom rides that helped end segregation in the South. He also served as a mediator between SNCC and Dr. King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), helping to bridge the divide between the two organizations.
He has been honored with numerous awards and accolades, including the NAACP Image Award, the National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honors. But his most incredible legacy is his unwavering commitment to social justice and his belief that art and activism can come together to create positive change in the world.
