DOES DISCIPLINING STUDENTS BASED ON RACE MAKE ANY SENSE?

Recently Washington Free Beacon published: “Portland Public Schools Must Now Consider Race, Gender Identity When Disciplining Students.” https://freebeacon.com/campus/portland-public-schools-must-now-consider-race-gender-identity-when-disciplining-students/
I believe Portlands’s plan once more lowers the standards for my race, African American. Every few months, I read yet again what we cannot accomplish, and the solution is always LOWER THE STANDARD.
African Americans do poorly on college entrance exams. Solution: Eliminate college entrance exams.
Black kids struggle to get accepted at Harvard, the University of North Carolina, and other elite schools. Solution: Lower Admission Standards for certain minorities.
Black students are underrepresented in college preparatory courses. Solution: Eliminate those courses. Unfortunately, I can keep going.
Portland School’s decision to consider race when applying disciplinary action again lowers the standards and expectations for black kids!

Bill and Styron Powers
In the landscape of American education and societal challenges, we, two black brothers, products of the segregated American South in the 1960s, find ourselves deeply concerned. Our upbringing emphasized the importance of education, hard work, and Judeo-Christian values, shaping our perspectives. As we witness the persistent racial wealth and education gaps, we fear a perilous path driven by absent fathers, eroding values, and an erroneous belief that excessive government funding solves complex issues.

Having retired from successful careers grounded in STEM education, we’ve learned to analyze problems at their core and develop practical solutions. However, contemporary efforts aimed at achieving “equity” often tackle superficial aspects without addressing root causes, as evidenced by race-based disciplinary policies in schools in the name of racial equity and social justice, and adjustments in college admission criteria that fail to confront disparities in academic performance.
Our concern extends to the dismal state of public education and escalating violent crime rates. Shocking statistics, such as Baltimore City’s math proficiency, indicate an alarming crisis within our schools despite the nation’s significant per-student expenditure and declining global academic standings. The solution of many colleges is to eliminate the requirement of college entrance exams.

One critical aspect we highlight is the disparity in study time among racial groups linked to the academic performance gap. We believe a root cause of weak High School reading, math, and science scores is the time different racial groups spend studying. A recent study showed that students of:
- Asian descent spent ~134 minutes/day studying.
- White descent spent ~56 minutes/day
- Hispanic descent spent ~50 minutes/day
- Black descent spent ~37 minutes/day.
Empirical evidence reveals a correlation between rising crime rates and the abandonment of families by fathers, emphasizing the societal impact of family structures.

Reflecting on Jason Riley’s insights, we contemplate the potential adverse effects of Great Society social programs on black economic progress, suggesting a generational crisis stemming from these initiatives, warranting more than just financial solutions.
Our upbringing, guided by a strong father, ingrained the value of education and accountability. We reject the notion of government reliance or attributing all problems to systemic racism, advocating instead for informed action and self-accountability.
We firmly believe that achieving equality demands collective accountability and proactive measures from individuals, families, the black community, churches, and schools. Taking responsibility for our failures and driving improvements is the path to true progress.

In urging a departure from the status quo, we call for a united effort and individual responsibility to rectify societal issues, aiming for a more informed, action-oriented populace committed to tangible change.
Lowering educational and school disciplinary standards to the lowest common denominator is a surefire path to even more failure.
