THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTORS AND ROLE MODELS WHO LOOK LIKE YOU
INTRODUCTION – AGNES POWERS
“Ed Bradley was my favorite CBS journalist. “He graduated from college in 1964 with a degree in education. After college, he had a full-time job as a 6th-grade math teacher and a part-time job at a radio station. He eventually quit his job as a teacher he became a full-time journalist. Ed Bradley’s journalism career was boosted while still teaching when he won acclaim for covering the 1964 race riot in Philadelphia. He quit teaching and became a full-time journalist in 1967. Ed Bradley was fluent in French and became a journalist in Paris in 1971. In 1972 he was transferred to Vietnam and Cambodia, where he became a journalist who covered the Vietnam War. A mortar round in Cambodia wounded him, and he briefly returned to the United States to recover but volunteered to return to Vietnam and Cambodia as a journalist. In 1976 Ed Bradley became the first black White House correspondent for CBS news. Because Ed Bradley earned numerous prestigious journalism awards, he joined the CBS news show 60 Minutes in 1981. He worked at 60 Minutes for 25 years, reporting on more than 500 news stories and earning many news awards. Ed Bradley was an articulate black man with political views similar to mine. In 2005, I was shocked when Ed Bradley started losing weight, and I worried about his health. But he continued working for 60 Minutes, so I had no idea he had leukemia. His death in 2006 at the age of 65 bothered me. I felt that he was too young to die.” Agnes Powers

WIKIPEDIA SUMMARY – EDWARD RUDOLPH {ED} BRADLEY, JR.
“Edward Rudolph “Ed” Bradley, Jr. (June 22, 1941 – November 9, 2006) was an American journalist who is known for his career as a reporter for the with CBS News television show 60 Minutes. Bradley was recognized for his investigative journalism work with 20 Emmy Awards, the Radio Television Digital News Association Paul White Award, the National Association of Black Journalists Lifetime Achievement Award, and multiple Peabody Awards. Prior to reporting for 60 Minutes, Bradley reported on the fall of Saigon, Vietnam, and was the first African American White House correspondent. He also anchored the program CBS Sunday Night News with Ed Bradley.
Bradley graduated from Cheyney University in 1964 with a degree in education. While studying at Cheyney, Georgie Woods inspired him to work in radio. Bradley worked as a mathematics teacher and took a job with WDAS-AM–FM, for which he covered the Philadelphia race riots and was motivated to move into investigative journalism.
In 1967, Bradley moved to New York City and was hired by WCBS radio as a reporter. He moved to France in 1971, and reported for CBS on the Paris Peace Talks before covering the Vietnam War and the Cambodian Civil War. In Cambodia, Bradley was injured by mortar fire and earned the DuPont Columbia Award and a George Polk Award.
CBS promoted Bradley to cover the Jimmy Carter 1976 presidential campaign; he later became the first African American White House correspondent. Bradley’s 1979 reporting on Vietnamese refugees“The Boat People” earned him numerous awards and led to his role at 60 Minutes in 1981. Bradley was proudest of his 60 Minutes interview with singer Lena Horne. During his career as a 60 Minutescorrespondent, Bradley covered over 500 stories—including interviews with performers Laurence Olivier and Bob Dylan, and investigative reports into the Catholic Church abuse cases and the murder of Emmett Till.

60 Minutes

Following Dan Rather‘s departure for CBS Evening News in 1981, Bradley joined 60 Minutes.[22][2]Producer Don Hewitt hired Bradley for the role because Bradley was “a great reporter and a great gentleman”.[23] In Bradley’s first year at 60 Minutes, he traveled approximately 100,000 miles (160,000 km) to over 45 cities while reporting on assignment for the news program. Bradley worked on 60 Minutes for 25 years and reported on more than 500 stories, covering political corruption, war, music, sports, and other topics.[3][24] Among Bradley’s interviewees were Michael Jordan, Bill Bradley, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Neil Armstrong, Timothy McVeigh, Subcomandante Marcos, Howard Stern, and Laurence Olivier.

Bradley said his most memorable interview was with Lena Horne.[5] He later said; “If I arrived at the pearly gates and Saint Peter said, ‘What have you done to deserve entry?’ I’d just say, ‘Did you see my Lena Horne story?’ Bradley won an Emmy Award for the segment. He also won Emmys for “In the Belly of the Beast”, in which he interviewed writer and criminal Jack Henry Abbott, as well as his 1985 investigation of schizophrenia.
Bradley became known for his fashion sense on 60 Minutes. He was the first male correspondent to regularly wear an earring on-air and drew attention and criticism for doing so. He had his left ear pierced in 1986 after receiving a diamond stud from Liza Minnelli following an interview with her.
Bradley turned down repeated offers to anchor CBS Evening News and remained in his post at 60 Minutes. Producer Alan Weisman noted it was rare in the industry to turn down such an offer. In addition to 60 Minutes, Bradley also anchored the CBS news magazine program Street Stories from 1992 to 1993.[
In 2000, Bradley conducted the only television interview granted by Timothy McVeigh, for which Bradley won an Emmy award. He won a Peabody Award for his investigation “Death by Denial”, an examination of AIDS deaths in Africa. The piece has been credited with a reduction in the cost of AIDS drugs and increased donations to the continent. Bradley won two more Emmy awards for his coverage of sexual abuse within the Catholic Church and his investigation of the murder of Emmett Till. Bradley was diagnosed with lymphocytic leukemia but continued working, reporting more than 20 stories in the year before his death. His final stories, about the Texas City Refinery explosion and the Duke lacrosse case, aired in October 2006. He won posthumous Emmy and Peabody awards for the latter story.”
