Illinois Teen Abraham Buckner Makes History As First Black Valedictorian at High School In 156 Years
“I Just Feel Grateful.”
“After 156 years, an Illinois school has graduated its first African American valedictorian. The school’s principal says the entire community is excited for the young history maker Abraham Buckner to receive this honor. Buckner made history at St. Teresa High School in Decatur, Illinois, a private school founded in 1866 by Roman Catholic nuns. The small school has a little over 200 students and is predominantly white.” The honor held weight for the teen because it showed him the payoff of hard work and what happens when one trains himself to be disciplined to reach a milestone.“
“I just feel grateful for the position I was in. Everything just goes to my environment that I was in. It just helped me build myself up to try to stay disciplined,” said Buckner.
In addition to his environment, “his focus was molded by mentors he never met but admired from afar.
Buckner, who will graduate with a 4.86 GPA, says, “Kobe Bryant and his outstanding legacy of excellence motivated him to never give up.”
Brian Buckner, the scholar’s father, said, “his son always has been “a thinker. Always a thinker, always reading, And I’m a writer, so he and I have had many different discussions about many things.”
JUST DO IT!
I clicked on this article because I was ecstatic to see a brown face as a valedictorian. But I pondered why did this take 156 years.
Black kids average 37 minutes a day studying, while Asian Americans average 134 minutes daily. Abraham most likely studied over two hours daily.
- Asian Americans spent ~134 minutes/day studying.
- White Americans spent ~56 minutes/day;
- Hispanic Americans spent ~50 minutes/per day
- Black Americans spent ~37 minutes/day.
Black and Hispanic students’ poor study habits are the root causes of their dismal performance on college entrance exams, failure to enroll in honors classes, and DECADES’ long wealth gaps between the races.
While the U.S. spends more per student than any other nation, our global ranking is embarassing. The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 data showed that U.S. students’ average reading score was 497, {19th out of 79 countries}. In math, the average score for U.S. students was 478, {40th out of 79 countries}. The average score for U.S. students in science was 489, {25th out of 79 countries}.
CONCLUSION – CELEBRATE ABRAHAM’S ACCOMPLISHMENT AND EMBRACE THAT OUR KIDS CAN ACHIEVE GREATNESS!
Abraham earned being valedictorian through hard work, a two-parent home (his environment), and mentors he had never met but admired.
