EVA MOSKOWITZ’S STRONG ADVOCACY FOR CHARTER SCHOOLS – WEDNESDAY’S RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS SERIES
When you ask young people to name a role model, they often name an entertainer, like Beyonce, Lebron, or Lady Gaga (I do like that name). This series celebrates a rainbow of role models, including physicians, scientists, entrepreneurs, school teachers, and, yes, a few entertainers. They all have a few things in common: hard work and a spirit of never giving up. I love learning from inspirational people who inspire me to drop MY EXCUSES and JUST DO IT! Role models who stretch my ambitions and make me reach for the impossible.
There is dignity in achievement and success—in becoming a great factor in civilization.” Carter G. Woodson.

The Role of Eva Moskowitz in Advocating for Charter Schools– A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}

Eva Moskowitz, the founder and CEO of Success Academy Charter Schools, has become a beacon of hope and a role model for those advocating for school choice and expanding charter schools. Her journey illustrates the critical need for more charter schools in the United States, reinforcing that educational innovation can lead to transformative outcomes for students, particularly in underserved communities. Yet, African Americans continue to vote wholeheartedly for a party, the Democrats, that fights and blocks one of the few tools that lift some poor black kids out of poverty and even the high risk of death.
The words “black lives matter” should NOT be uttered by the recent Opposers in Chief of Charter Schools: Obama, Biden, Harris. All millionaires who would NEVER send their child or grandchild to a US inner city school. Obama proved this when he sent his two daughters to a private DC school while defunding a DC charter school! Because he gives a damn about his kid’s education, but not the poor black kids in the US, who have a better chance of prison than becoming well educated.
Black parents strongly support charter schools, seeing this as the ONLY chance for their kids to escape the world of poverty. Charter supporters outnumber detractors two to one, and blacks who favor charters outnumber opponents by four to one. However, this is less important to the education establishment than the fact that most charters aren’t unionized. Charter schools have earned the wrath of teachers’ unions, who do everything they can to shut them down versus lose more dues-paying members. The teachers’ unions do not care about their teachers’ competency and ethics; it’s all about the dollars. They support teachers who are incompetent and criminals because they still pay dues. These unions are supported 100% by one political party. The party of former Enslavers and Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Harris – The Democrat Party.
Geoffrey Canada is a charter school operator in Harlem. “People are upset because I believe that these poor kids in Harlem, who have every social ill you can imagine…”Name one, we’ve got it. Gangs? Yes, we’ve got it. Substance abuse? Got that, too. Single [parent] families? Yes, we’ve got all of that. Parents who don’t care? Yes, we’ve got all of that. But my kids are going to go to college. And it doesn’t matter what the issues are.”
“But my kids are going to go to college. And it doesn’t matter what the issues are.”
The Rise of Charter Schools

Charter schools are publicly funded but independently run institutions that offer an alternative to traditional public schools. They have gained traction over the last few decades, especially in urban areas with stark educational disparities. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), there were approximately 7,500 charter schools serving over 3.2 million students in the United States as of 2021. The growing prominence of charter schools reflects a broader demand for more innovative, responsive educational systems that cater to diverse student populations.
Charter schools are NOT the long-term answer, but the desperately needed changes in public schools.
Eva Moskowitz’s Vision

Eva Moskowitz founded Success Academy in 2006 with a clear mission: to provide children from low-income families with access to a high-quality education. The schools operate under the belief that every child, regardless of their background, deserves a chance to succeed. A strong emphasis on rigorous academics, high expectations, and a commitment to character development has characterized Moskowitz’s approach.
Under her leadership, Success Academy has grown into one of the largest charter school networks in New York City, with over 47 schools and more than 18,000 students. Impressive academic outcomes evidence the success of these schools. For example, Success Academy students consistently outperform their peers in traditional public schools. According to a 2019 study by the Economic Policy Institute, Success Academy students’ math and English Language Arts (ELA) test scores far exceed those of students in neighboring districts. Specifically, Success Academy students scored in the top 1% in New York for math and the top 3% for ELA.
Data Supporting Charter School Effectiveness

A 2020 study published by the Stanford University Center for Research on Education Outcomes (CREDO) found that students who attend charter schools in urban settings are significantly more likely to perform better academically than their peers in traditional public schools. The study indicated that students in charter schools gained an additional 40 days of learning in reading and an extra 29 days in math compared to their peers in district schools.
Further research has shown that charter schools’ benefits extend beyond academic achievements. The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) found that charter school students were likelier to graduate from high school and enroll in college.
Addressing Common Concerns
Charter schools are subject to rigorous oversight and must meet performance standards to continue receiving funding. A report from the Center for Education Reform highlights that charter schools, on average, have higher accountability measures than traditional public schools, demonstrating their commitment to delivering quality education.
The Urgent Need for More Charter Schools

The call for more charter schools is particularly relevant today. The COVID-19 pandemic further exposed the inequities within the education system, disproportionately affecting students from low-income backgrounds and communities of color. The New York Times reported that remote learning exacerbated educational disparities, with students in low-income neighborhoods falling significantly behind their affluent peers.
Moskowitz’s Success Academy provides a model for addressing these gaps. The network’s approach to extended learning hours, rigorous curriculum, and a focus on socio-emotional learning enables students to thrive even in challenging circumstances. As the educational landscape evolves, the demand for high-performing charter schools like Success Academy will continue to grow.
Conclusion – What is possible when leaders prioritize educational equity and innovation?

Eva Moskowitz remains a critical figure in the charter school movement, exemplifying what is possible when leaders prioritize educational equity and innovation. Her work with Success Academy provides a blueprint for success in charter schools and advocates for the systemic changes necessary to improve education for all students. The need for more charter schools is undeniable as we look to the future. Expanding access to quality education is essential for breaking the cycle of poverty and providing every child with the tools they need to succeed.
