I celebrate ACHIEVEMENT EVERY DAY! When I discover role models, I do not see skin color, age, religion, sex, attractiveness (ok, I like beautiful ladies), or other nonessentials. I love learning from inspirational people that inspire me to drop MY EXCUSES and DO IT! Role models who stretch my ambitions and make me reach for the impossible.

Unveiling the Musical Prodigy: Tom Wiggins’ Remarkable Journey from Slavery to Inspiration – A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}

Resilience in Notes: The Inspiring Tale of Tom Wiggins, Blind Slave Turned Music Icon
Tom Wiggins was born Thomas Greene Bethune on May 25, 1849, on a plantation in Georgia. His parents, enslaved people Mingo and Charity Wiggins, worked on the plantation. Tom was blind at birth, and this condition made him vulnerable.
According to some historical accounts, when Tom was an infant, he was attacked by a slave names Aunt Charity. She attempted to kill him by drowning him in boiling water. It’s believed that her motive for the attempted murder might have been rooted in superstitions, fear, or desperation due to the harsh conditions of slavery. Tom’s mother, Charity, rescued him from the boiling water, saving his life. However, the incident had a lasting impact on Tom’s health. He suffered from seizures and developmental delays because of the attack.
Colonel James Neil Bethune, the owner of the plantation, purchased Tom and his family shortly after the attempted murder. Tom had access to a piano, and his talent for remembering and reproducing sounds was immediately apparent. Colonel Bethune recognized Tom’s musical abilities and took a keen interest in his upbringing and education. Bethune ensured Tom received an education, musical training, and performing opportunities. Tom’s musical talents flourished, and he became known as “Blind Tom.”
A Virtuoso of Unparalleled Talent
Blind Tom’s musical abilities were extraordinary. After hearing them just once, he displayed an ability to mimic complex melodies, and he swiftly mastered a vast repertoire of music spanning multiple genres. His performances combined incredible piano virtuosity with elements of improvisation, making each rendition an awe-inspiring experience.
What set Blind Tom apart wasn’t just his prodigious musical talent but also his ability to bridge the gap between cultures and generations. He seamlessly blended European classical compositions with African American spirituals and folk tunes, creating a unique sound that resonated with audiences across the spectrum. His remarkable performances took him on tours across the United States and even to Europe, captivating audiences and earning him international acclaim.

CONCLUSION – The Unforgettable Melodies of Tom Wiggins: From Slavery to Inspiring Elton John
Tom’s story reminds us not to judge someone’s potential based on external appearances or circumstances. Despite his adversity, Blind Tom’s remarkable musical talents and ability to overcome obstacles continue to inspire and captivate people today. Blind Tom’s legacy inspires us to embrace our unique talents, challenge societal norms, and strive for greatness in all aspects of life.
Many historians believe Tom was on the autism spectrum, which could explain his extraordinary memory. He would go on to perform at concerts throughout the Americas and Europe. His extraordinary music has inspired music lovers worldwide, including Elton John, who composed a song in his honor.
