Dr. Voddie T. Baucham, Jr.– A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}

This week’s role model was recommended by my friend Dr. James Leemann.
“Dr. Voddie Baucham, was born in Los Angeles Baucham studied at New Mexico State University and Rice University, playing football as a tight end. He then transferred to Houston Baptist University, where he graduated with a B.A. He went on to obtain an M.Div. from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and a D.Min. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.[4] Baucham also did additional post-graduate study at the University of Oxford. He founded Voddie Baucham Ministries in 1993.[6] Baucham served as pastor of Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, Texas (a congregation within the Southern Baptist Convention) until he moved to Zambia in 2015.”

On his website, link below, Under Resources, I found several of Dr. Baucham’s sermons and noticed an intriguing title: “What He Must Do If He Wants To Marry My Daughter.” As a father, you can see why this sermon held some appeal. I clicked this hour- sermon and planned to sample a few minutes. Instead, I listened to the entire address. I agreed with the “MUST HAVES” he outlined for a future son-in-law!
AN ELOQUENT COMMUNICATOR
As a child, my family attended Island Creek AME Church every Sunday. Most Sundays, I daydreamed and prayed that the clock would move faster!
There were numerous ministers in that pulpit. They all had a similar style—lots of screaming and shouting, sometimes something like dancing (not a lot of rhythm, by the way).
Even as a child, I wondered why we were not learning more about God and the critical issues of my time. This was the time of Dr. Martin Luther King, the Vietnam War, Rampant Racism, hatred of blacks in the South and, honestly, much of our nation, and Segregated but UNEQUAL Schools. These topics were all my norm and covered by my parents’ favorite- NBC Nightly News, so I assumed it was worthy of a little discussion in that pulpit. Guess I was born a nerd!
I highlighted my experiences to contrast the differences in Dr. Baucham’s sermons. Well thought out, educational, and pertinent. He uses his Bible knowledge and education to support his beliefs. I will continue listening to this man. His sermons help me critically think about today’s pressing issues. You get to decide if you agree or disagree.
I next watched “Biblical Justice vs. Social Justice” Baucham explained why people seem to speak two different languages when discussing Black Lives Matter, Defund the Police, our open borders, etc. He demonstrates Social Justice is not a heart issue but a state issue, not about individuals; it is about groups and outcomes for groups.

The use of force to achieve equality will destroy freedom. And the force introduced for good purposes will end up in the hands of people who will use it to promote their own interests.”

“Voddie Baucham is a husband, father, grandfather, former pastor, church planter, author, and professor. He currently serves as Dean of the School of Divinity at African Christian University in Lusaka, Zambia.
“Voddie is known for his ability to demonstrate the Bible’s relevance to everyday life without compromising the centrality of Christ and the gospel. Those who hear him preach find themselves both challenged and encouraged.
Whether teaching on classical apologetic issues like the validity and historicity of the Bible, or the resurrection of Christ; or teaching on biblical manhood/womanhood, marriage and family, or the Social Justice Movement, he helps ordinary people understand the significance of thinking and living biblically in every area of life.
It is impossible to understand Voddie’s approach to the Bible without first understanding the path he has walked. Raised in a non-Christian, single-parent home, Voddie did not hear the gospel until he was in college. His journey to faith was a very unusual and intellectual one. Consequently, he understands what it means to be a skeptic, and knows what it’s like to try to figure out the Christian life without relying on the traditions of men. As a result, he speaks to ‘outsiders’ in ways few Bible teachers can.
Dr. Baucham holds degrees from Houston Baptist University (BA in Christianity/BA in Sociology), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (D.Min.) with additional post-graduate study at the University of Oxford, England (Regent’s Park College).
Away from the pulpit and the classroom, Voddie is also a voice actor, lending his voice to films like George Washington Carver: An Uncommon Way, and the 2017 national theatrical release, Genesis: Paradise Lost. He is also an accomplished Martial Artist. He took up Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2012 as an avenue of self-defense training, personal fitness, and outreach. However, he began competing and found both a passion and a talent. He has won numerous tournaments and titles, including winning the 2014 Pan American Championship in his division.
Voddie and his wife, Bridget have been married since 1989. They have nine children and three grandchildren. The Bauchams are committed home educators.”
