Principal Henry Darby – A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}
Henry Darby is the principal of North Charleston High School in South Carolina. During the day, he’s a devoted school leader. But he works three nights a week from 10 pm to 7 am. He puts on his Walmart vest and stocks shelves. Every single dollar he earns goes straight to students who are struggling with food, housing, or other basic needs. Henry said, “As long as there’s a child in need, I’ll do what I can.”
People learned about Henry’s nighttime job because he initially told only a few people. The word quietly spread when one of his Walmart coworkers realized he was also a principal. His story went viral, and a community member started a GoFundMe so Henry could reach even more students in need. Kind strangers donated over $190,000 to help families pay rent, keep the lights on, and make sure no child went to bed hungry.
Henry said the greatest reward isn’t the money or the awards. It’s seeing his students grow in confidence and hope. Even after all these years of doing this, he continues to go on. Some of his students were surprised to find him working at Walmart.
Henry said that he tried to teach his students that all honest work is honorable. That’s love.
If we want better children, we must become better adults. If we want stronger communities, we must first strengthen ourselves.
