Barak Obama

When my beautiful daughter was a baby, I became her Audible app—no batteries required, chocolate preferred.  I read countless children’s books to her, many thoughtfully chosen by her grandmom, a retired schoolteacher.  Growing up in a home filled with avid readers, I cherished every moment spent reading to my little one.

Reading to Amanda was the highlight of my day.  It wasn’t just about teaching her to read; it was a lifelong bond of love and trust.  Through stories, we created joyful and exciting memories, sparked her imagination, and showed her that learning could be an adventure.

As she grew older, Amanda carefully selected the books I would read to her.  Before long, my little genius was reading on her own.  She was an early reader, and soon, our bedtime routine evolved—we would both grab our books and read together, side by side.  Those moments, immersed in stories and shared silence, remain among my happiest memories.

Education Does Not End When They Climb Off The School Bus!

We must recognize that education does not stop when kids leave the school building daily.  Formal instruction is only one part of their learning journey.  What happens at home—the conversations they engage in, the books they are exposed to, and the language they absorb—all shape their cognitive growth and future success.

Research shows that the more diverse words a child hears, the stronger their vocabulary becomes.  But reading is far more than words—it’s a gateway to imagination, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.  From their earliest days, children learn from the stories we share with them.  They absorb language, tone, and emotion, shaping how they communicate and understand the world.

Reading Shapes Us

Despite this knowledge, many parents underestimate the importance of reading aloud, sometimes considering it tedious or unnecessary.  But reading to a child does not have to feel like a chore—it can be one of the most meaningful and enjoyable parts of parenthood.  Beyond developing literacy skills, reading fosters connection, sparks curiosity, and instills a lifelong love of learning.

Every page turned is an opportunity to teach, inspire, and bond with your child. Let’s embrace reading as a simple yet powerful way to invest in their future!

Disparity in Access and Attitudes

Our Nation’s Reading Grading: F

Despite the undeniable benefits of reading, many children, especially those in underprivileged communities, miss out on this essential activity.  The reasons for this disparity are complex and often heartbreaking.  Some families lack access to age-appropriate books, while others struggle with busy schedules or don’t know how to make reading an enjoyable experience.  Sometimes, parents feel embarrassed by their reading abilities or cannot read.

Even more troubling is the widespread misconception that reading is “not fun.” When this belief takes root, books become a chore rather than a source of joy and discovery. The unfortunate result? Children grow up without experiencing the magic of storytelling, the expansion of their imaginations, or the intellectual and emotional benefits of reading.

It’s disheartening to hear parents or guardians say they don’t have time or that their children aren’t interested in books.  But here’s the truth—children are naturally curious.

They are eager to explore, to dream, and to connect.  With the right approach, reading can be one of the most engaging and enjoyable experiences a family can share.

As parents, we have the power to change the narrative.  We transform a simple activity into something magical by approaching reading as an adventure—using expressive voices, acting out characters, or even letting children help tell the story.  Books open doors to new worlds, strengthen bonds, and instill a lifelong love of learning.  It’s not just about literacy; it’s about enriching a child’s life in ways that extend far beyond the pages.

Let’s make reading a cherished part of childhood and ensure that every child can experience its incredible benefits regardless of background.

The Long-Term Impact of Cultivating a Love of Reading

An Illiterate Nation

Children who grow up with a love for reading tend to excel academically and become more well-rounded.  Their vocabulary and comprehension skills develop earlier than those of their peers who aren’t regularly exposed to books.  These foundational skills are crucial for mastering school subjects, understanding instructions, expressing thoughts clearly, and engaging in critical thinking, all essential for lifelong success.

But the benefits of reading extend far beyond academics.  Children immersed in books often exhibit higher empathy, emotional resilience, and social awareness levels.  Stories introduce them to different cultures, experiences, and perspectives, fostering compassion and broadening their understanding of the world.  Through narratives of courage, kindness, and perseverance, they learn valuable life lessons that shape their character.

As they grow, this love for reading translates into confidence and independence. Strong vocabulary and sharp comprehension skills empower children to articulate their ideas, advocate for themselves, and connect meaningfully with others, crucial qualities for leadership, teamwork, and personal growth.

My Gift From Reading

I grew up in a small rural southern town, where many of my relatives, still in 2025, have never left the state, much less the country.

As a child, I read about remarkable places I dreamed of seeing one day.  My education and love for reading helped me to work in over 30 countries and visit many places I imagined as a child.

I read every night and continue adding to my wish list.  In August this year, my wife and I travel to Kenya and Tanzania.  From dreams to reality!

Reading aloud, sharing stories, and fostering curiosity can unlock a child’s potential.  Every child deserves the joy and benefits of being read to, and as parents, we hold the key to cultivating a lifelong passion for learning.  Let’s make reading a gift we pass on—a lifetime gift.

WE HAVE A PROBLEM!

Parents Don’t Want to Read To Their Kids

I’ve attached an article lamenting a troubling reality: many parents do not read to their children.  Sadly, this trend makes sense.  If you’re not a reader yourself (and many adults admit to never picking up a book), it’s easy to overlook the crucial role reading plays in a child’s development.
