Faith and Family Matter More Than Race – A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}
We recently celebrated Christmas, but many people today avoid the phrase “Merry Christmas.” Why? Today, most schools ban prayer. Why? Coaches have been fired for prying before or after a game. Why? Celebrities model having children outside of marriage. Why? What have these changes accomplished?
Faith and Family Matter More Than Race and Status When It Comes to Children:

William Jeynes’ 2020 study from the Public Discourse stated: “If an African American or Latino student was a person of faith and came from a two-biological parent family, the achievement gap disappeared, even when adjusting for socioeconomic status.”
Parental family structure and parental involvement were significant explanatory factors and solutions concerning the achievement gap,” Jeynes continued, explaining that having two involved parents was a considerable advantage, regardless of class or race.
Let me be clear- I am NOT criticizing dedicated single parents.
The reality is that when one parent must take on the roles and functions of two, it is simply more difficult than when two parents are present. It happens too often when our brave military men and women are killed while serving. Or our emergency services brave men and women who willingly run into harm’s way to protect us!
But It’s simple math: one plus one equals two.

Faith also has a significant impact.
Jeynes further explained: “In addition to family structure, a student’s faith also significantly impacts their academic performance.
“Regularly attending church or another house of worship and defining oneself as a very religious person yielded the most significant reductions in the achievement gap. There are likely several reasons for this relationship; faith can give a person a sense of purpose and a disciplined lifestyle supporting academic success. Various other studies have confirmed that people of faith do better in school by a pretty sizable margin.”
CONCLUSION

The color of our skin does NOT give us a competitive advantage or disadvantage; what our parents taught and modeled for us as we were raised molds us. The order—education, employment, marriage, and then children—works for everyone.
