Deep Dive Podcast – Belle da Costa Greene, a Black Woman Forced To Pass As White to Become The Director of the Morgan Library

 Belle da Costa Greene, Director of Morgan Library, was a Black woman hiding in a segregated and racist America. A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}

Belle da Costa Greene was born on December 13, 1883, and passed away on May 10, 1950, becoming a Trailblazer in American Libraries.

In a deeply segregated and racially charged America, Belle da Costa Greene’s accomplishments were impossible for a black woman.   Fortunately, her mother, Genevieve Ida Fleet Greener, decided to pass her as white, and she chose to continue this “white” lie. Genevieve Ida Fleet Greener lived the challenges her family would face due to racial discrimination. She made the pivotal choice for her children to adopt a different identity early on while Belle was still in school. This life-altering decision came after Genevieve separated from Belle’s father, Richard T. Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard College.   Once active participants in Washington, D.C.’s Black high society, the Greener family faced new realities post-separation.   Genevieve modified their last name by dropping the final letter, and with her lighter skin, she and her children could navigate a world designed to exclude them.

Greene’s Story

Greene’s story is one of resilience, ambition, and an unyielding commitment to her profession—one that would ultimately leave a lasting impact on the world of libraries and rare book collections.   Appointed as the director and inaugural librarian of the Morgan Library, founded by the influential American financier J. Pierpont Morgan, Greene’s achievements were groundbreaking for her time.

Greene’s transformation opened significant doors, allowing her to pursue her passion for the library.   She began her career at Princeton University, where she showcased her skills and met a cousin of J. Pierpont Morgan, who was looking for someone to organize his growing collection. “The interview went amazingly, as we can all imagine,” Ciallela said.   “And in 1905, she began working for Pierpont Morgan as his librarian, cataloging his collection and eventually starting this amazing building we are still celebrating today.”

Thanks to her talent and the connections made during her time there, she secured a position as the librarian for Morgan.   In 1905, Greene officially began cataloging Morgan’s extensive collection, laying the foundation for what would eventually become the remarkable Morgan Library and Museum we celebrate today. In an era when women were beginning to gain rights—including the right to vote—Greene’s role as a librarian and director of a major institution was genuinely exceptional.   She did not merely participate in the world of rare books; she dominated it.   Often, she found herself as one of only two women on auction floors, gaining notoriety in influential collector circles.   Her visibility in these spaces thrust her into the public eye, making her a feature in newspapers and trade publications.

HER CHALLENGES

The attention came with its own set of challenges.   Media portrayals frequently noted her complexion and physical appearance.   They would always point out her dark hair or her wild hair or their darker skin color,” Ciallela said.

This reflects the complicated intersection of race and gender in public perceptions of Greene. Despite the scrutiny, she remained undeterred, continuing to build her legacy in an environment that was not always welcoming.

Belle da Costa Greene’s story is a testament to her remarkable achievements and a poignant reminder of the sacrifices and decisions made by individuals navigating a world defined by segregation and prejudice.   Her legacy inspires future generations to challenge boundaries and reshape institutions to pursue equality and excellence.   In celebrating Greene, we acknowledge her accomplishments and the broader historical context that shaped her journey, reminding us of the importance of resilience and one person’s impact in transforming society.

As for her personal life, Greene never married and had no children.   She dedicated her life to her career in libraries and rare book collections, becoming a prominent figure.   Her focus on professional achievement, coupled with the societal dynamics of her time, influenced her decision to remain single throughout her life. She also may have feared having children that could not pass. She led a celebrated life, forced to hide her truth.   Today, we celebrate this remarkable African American woman.

There is no record of Greene’s thoughts about passing as a white woman.   Before she died in 1950, she burned her 10-volume journals and diaries.   Ciallela said Greene “wrote things down that she dare not even think to herself” in those journals.   Ciallela also slowly retreated from public view as she aged and her natural features became more pronounced.   Exhibit attendees may never honestly know why Greene chose to pass as white, but the Morgan Library’s exhibit describes how her legacy spans generations and ripples through libraries today.   “She loved being a librarian.  That was her essence,” Ciallela said.   “She was so proud of everything she built and created a family with this staff.   And so I think that her work kept her moving forward – ‘I might be hiding this portion of myself, but the world gets to see all of this other stuff that I am accomplishing.’”

CONCLUSION

A new exhibit, “A Librarian’s Legacy,” opened in October 2024, just in time for Morgan’s 100th anniversary. It traces Greene’s life and lasting influence as the library’s first director.

I visited the Morgan Library and Museum a few years ago with my brother and niece and shared some of my photographs. It is a breathtakingly beautiful library. I was delighted to learn more about the librarian, Belle da Costa Greene, who dedicated her life to creating this world-class library.

Greene chooses to pass as white to fulfill her dreams. She had no other choice in this harsh and racist era. I cannot help but wonder if she experienced loneliness, having to deny her family and heritage. She was forced to live without love, afraid to marry a white man, as he may discover she was living a lie, and scared to have children, as they may be unable to pass. She could not marry a black man during this racist era. Greene had her passions: books, the Morgan Library, and many more we will never know. But was her life genuinely fulfilled? Who remained to mourn her? Who truly loved Belle da Costa Greene?

The name Belle da Costa Greene might not ring a bell, but New York’s historic Morgan Library and Museum is trying to change that.
