Ever Heard of Joseph Oklahombi?  A Forgotten Hero of World War I– A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}

Sgt. Alvin York is known as one of the most heroic soldiers of World War I, and he was.  I recently learned of another remarkable WW II veteran who deserves the same spotlight, Joseph Oklahombi, a Native American soldier from Oklahoma whose heroic exploits are extraordinary!

The Legacy of a Choctaw Warrior

Joseph Oklahombi, a member of the Choctaw Nation, was a soldier who distinguished himself in ways that were both extraordinary and inspirational.  By age 23, this expert hunter found himself amidst the brutal landscape of World War I, facing the formidable German forces.  On a mission requiring every ounce of his physical and mental fortitude, Oklahombi embarked on a daring operation that would define his legacy.

A Daring Assault

The infamous day on which Oklahombi sprang into action started like many others in the trenches.  Facing a harrowing barrage of enemy gunfire, his fellow soldiers were helpless against a machine gun installation that was cutting them down mercilessly.  With courage that belied his youth, Oklahombi observed that something had to be done to save the lives of his fellow soldiers.  Displaying remarkable tactical acumen and raw bravery, he took it upon himself to execute a daring charge.

Assuming the role of a soldier and a hunter, he navigated through a series of barbed wire barricades and managed to reach the enemy position.  Armed with sheer determination and unparalleled skill, he launched an assault on the machine-gun nests, managing to pin down an astounding 250 German soldiers.  Throughout this intense encounter, he captured 171 of them after killing 79.  This act of bravery not only saved countless American lives but also showcased his extraordinary combat abilities.

The Citation of Valor

Joseph Oklahombi’s courage did not go unnoticed.  His exceptional efforts were acknowledged through the prestigious Croix de Guerre, awarded to soldiers for acts of heroism in combat.  His citation reads:

“Under a violent barrage, Pvt. Oklahombi dashed to the attack of an enemy position, covering about 210 yards through barbed-wire entanglements.  He rushed on machine-gun nests, capturing 171 prisoners.  He stormed a strongly held position containing over 50 machine guns and many trench mortars.  Turned the captured guns on the enemy and held the position for four days despite a constant barrage of large projectiles and gas shells.  Crossed no man’s land often to get information concerning the enemy and assist his wounded comrades.”

These words paint the picture of a man willing to risk everything for his comrades and country.  Oklahombi’s actions illustrate bravery, a sense of responsibility, and leadership amidst chaos.

A Forgotten Hero

Despite his remarkable achievements and contributions to the war effort, Joseph Oklahombi’s story has largely been overlooked in mainstream narratives of American military history.  As a Native American, Oklahombi’s legacy serves as a poignant reminder of the many indigenous people who fought valiantly for the United States, often with little recognition upon their return.

Post-War Life

After War I, Joseph Oklahombi returned to a very different life than the one he had left behind.  Despite his heroic actions and being one of the most decorated soldiers from Oklahoma, he faced challenges in gaining recognition for his service and accomplishments.  His story did not receive the same attention as some of his contemporaries, contributing to a lasting obscurity.

Oklahombi continued to embrace his Native American heritage.  He was known as a member of the Choctaw Nation, and he engaged with his community, emphasizing the importance of cultural identity and heritage in his post-war life.  Like many veterans, Oklahombi faced challenges adapting to civilian life after the war.  The trauma of combat and the transition back to everyday life were significant issues for many returning soldiers—especially given the psychological toll of the conflict.

Oklahombi became involved in veteran affairs and worked to support other veterans, particularly those from Native American communities.  His experience as a soldier provided him with a unique perspective on the needs and rights of Native American veterans.  Like many Indigenous veterans, Oklahombi’s contributions were often overlooked in historical narratives.  However, efforts have been made in recent years to acknowledge and honor his service, helping to preserve his legacy and highlight the sacrifices of Native American soldiers.

Joseph Oklahombi passed away in 1970.  His life story and the impact of his bravery have become more recognized over time as historians and advocates continue to shine a light on the contributions of Native American soldiers during and after World War I.

Conclusion – The Importance of Remembering

Joseph Oklahombi’s courage on the battlefield remains an inspiring story, and ongoing efforts to honor his memory contribute to a broader recognition of the sacrifices made by Native Americans in the military.

Joseph Oklahombi’s bravery and heroism exemplify the spirit of selflessness that defines authentic leadership.    By telling his story, we ensure his legacy, along with the legacy of countless others, continues to inspire and remind us of the courage it takes to stand up for what is right in the face of adversity.

Let us honor the forgotten, the unsung heroes and bring their stories to the forefront where they belong.  Joseph Oklahombi is a role model not just for Native Americans but for all of us—a testament to the heroism that can emerge from any American.
