FRED ROGERS: A REAL-WORLD ANGEL – WEDNESDAY’S RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS SERIES
When you ask young people to name a role model, they often name an entertainer, like Beyonce, Lebron, or Lady Gaga (I do like her name). This series celebrates a rainbow of role models, including physicians, scientists, entrepreneurs, school teachers, and, yes, a few entertainers. They all have a few things in common: hard work and a spirit of never giving up.
I love learning from inspirational people who inspire me to drop MY EXCUSES and DO IT! Role models who stretch my ambitions and make me reach for the impossible.
There is dignity in achievement and success—in becoming a great factor in civilization.” Carter G. Woodson.

FRED ROGERS: IS HE AN ANGEL!
If you prefer to listen, click below’s podcast:
Fred Rogers made winning a Lifetime Achievement Award more about others than himself. He asked the 1997 Emmy Awards audience to take ten seconds to thank those whose love and support made them who they are. Being Mr. Rogers, he kindly volunteered to keep time.
While viewing this video, I closed my eyes, and ten seconds passed before I could complete my thanks as tears welled in my eyes. I owe so much to many good people.
Thank you, Mr. Rogers, for the critical life lessons you helped me and millions more see and hopefully live.

MR. ROGERS – A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}

Fred Rogers, the beloved host of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,” was much more than a television personality; he was a gentle guide through childhood and life’s complexities. His lessons on kindness, respect, and celebrating diversity resonate deeply with people of all ages, reminding us to embrace our shared humanity. Today, more than ever, we need more people like Mister Rogers.
BE KIND!

The transformative power of kindness was at the heart of Fred Rogers’ philosophy. In an age where divisiveness often reigns, his simple yet profound messages remind us that every small act of kindness can create ripples of positivity in the world. Fred believed that kindness is not just an action; it’s a vital part of our being. He often said, “There’s no person in the whole world like you, and I like you just the way you are.” This affirmation encourages individuals, especially children, to embrace their uniqueness while fostering a culture of acceptance across all communities.
In a world where negativity and hostility often overshadow good intentions, Fred Rogers taught us the importance of consistently demonstrating kindness. He showed how kindness should be given without expecting anything in return and that everyone deserves love and understanding. Whether addressing viewers’ feelings about complex subjects or simply making the time to listen, he exemplified how we can change lives through genuine compassion.
RESPECT
Another cornerstone of Fred Rogers’ philosophy was respect. He emphasized that respect is fundamental to any relationship, whether with friends, family, or even those different from ourselves. By teaching children the value of respect, he was preparing future generations to engage with the world more harmoniously.
Rogers often employed storytelling and magical puppetry to illustrate the importance of treating others with dignity. Through characters like Daniel Tiger and Lady Aberlin, he created scenarios that required children to navigate their feelings and understand the experiences of others. By empathizing with the characters, children learn to respect the feelings of those around them, thus forging deeper connections and stronger communities.

Rogers’ respectful approach extended to his dialogues about intolerance and discrimination. He addressed these heavy topics gracefully, inviting conversations about differences and celebrating what makes us unique. For instance, his interactions with African American officer François Clemmons challenged societal norms and helped dismantle the barriers of racial prejudices during a tumultuous time in American history. Rogers laid the groundwork for a more inclusive and compassionate society by promoting respect.
DIVERSITY

Diversity was a critical theme throughout Fred Rogers’ life and work. He encouraged people to celebrate their differences and learn from one another. In today’s increasingly pluralistic society, embracing diversity is more important than ever. Rogers advocated for understanding that everyone brings something valuable regardless of race, religion, or background.
“Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” was groundbreaking in its inclusive approach. Rogers welcomed children and characters from various backgrounds into the neighborhood—not merely as tokens but as meaningful and integral parts of the story. By presenting diversity as relatable and accepting, Rogers nurtured a generation of viewers who valued differences rather than feared them.
One of the lessons he imparted was that our differences do not divide us; instead, they enrich the fabric of our lives. These lessons are crucial in today’s globalized world, where understanding and respecting diversity means fostering acceptance and cooperation. In teaching us to appreciate what makes us unique while finding common ground, Rogers inspired countless individuals to become advocates for inclusion.
GRATITUDE: Take Ten Seconds and Be Grateful

Fred Rogers also emphasized the importance of gratitude in our lives. In a fast-paced world where it’s easy to overlook the contributions of others, this simple ten-second exercise encourages us to slow down and appreciate people’s impact on our lives.
Gratitude is more than a fleeting feeling; it is essential to maintaining healthy relationships. With this practice, Rogers invited us to connect with our memories, expressing thanks to those who have been instrumental in our growth and ourselves for recognizing their importance. This approach helps cultivate an attitude of appreciation, reminding us that we are never alone in our struggles or successes.
Furthermore, when we acknowledge the mentors, friends, and family members who have shaped us, we reinforce the values of kindness and respect. By honoring their influence, we carry their legacies into our lives, inspiring others in the same way they inspired us.
WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE MR. ROGERS

When Fred Rogers received accolades for his work, he never sought the spotlight for himself. Instead, he always redirected that attention toward the messages he championed—kindness, respect, and the importance of valuing diversity. He understood that recognition is not merely about personal achievement but reflects the community’s efforts and encouragement.
He taught us to extend our gratitude toward those who elevate us, showing the power of love.
If your reflections make you think of someone still living, go hug them. If that is not possible, I am sure they will be delighted by your call.
Won’t You Be My Neighbor
“It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
It’s a neighborly day in this beauty wood,
A neighborly day for a beauty,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
I have always wanted to have a neighbor just like you,
I’ve always wanted to live in a neighborhood with you.
So let’s make the most of this beautiful day,
Since we’re together we might as well say,
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?
Won’t you be my neighbor?
Won’t you please,
Won’t you please?
Please won’t you be my neighbor?”
