PRESIDENT GEORGE H.W. BUSH #41, – A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}
On November 13, 2023, I visited the Presidential Library of George Herbert Walker Bush’s {#41} in College Station, Texas, with my brother and best friend, Bill Powers. This was our fifth Presidential Library tour. “We Are Nerds and We Know It”
Years ago, I was gifted a pair of George Bush very colorful socks. In his later years, Bush wore colorful socks with a perfect pattern for each occasion. Men, you should know ladies LOVE colorful and unique socks! This gift motivated me to read his biography and learn more about President Bush. I can tell you where to find delicious chicken fried steak and socks! I always need more colorful socks!
A ROLE MODEL BECAUSE:
AUTHENTIC COMMUNICATOR:
I hope a less articulate person will be before me whenever I speak publicly. President Bush stood up after “The Great Communicator”, Ronald Reagan. Reagan articulately and passionately displayed his love of country and had hundreds of funny stories applicable to any occasion. While President Bush’s humor sometimes required translation, I admired his honesty and commitment to our country.
STRENGTH AND RESPECT:
President Bush treated our adversaries and allies with respect when the Berlin Wall and the Soviet Union fell. Essential to maintaining peace.
RED LINES DRAWN IN BLOOD
Today’s politicians draw red lines using invisible ink. Their red lines and their words are meaningless. When Iraq invaded Kuwait, President Bush gave a date and time to withdraw after moving massive U.S. military forces in place. Saddam ignored the warning and crossed Bush’s Red Line. President Bush reluctantly committed our troops, praying for minimal loss of American lives. From start to finish, Desert Storm lasted 43 days, from Jan. 17 to Feb. 28, 1991. The land campaign is infamously known as the “100-hour ground war” for obvious reasons — that’s about as long as it lasted.
The U.S. lost 96 of our finest men and women in action.
ALMOST GIVING HIS LIFE TO SERVE HIS COUNTRY!
Driven by a sense of duty, George Bush, at 17, attempted to enlist in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was denied due to age but returned to enlist on his 18th birthday. During his service in the Navy, Bush’s plane was shot down over the Pacific. He plunged deep into the ocean, bobbed to the surface, and flopped onto a tiny raft. His head was bleeding, his eyes burning, his mouth and throat raw from salt water; the future 41st President of the United States was alone. Sensing that his crew had not made it, he was overcome. He felt the weight of responsibility as he wept for their loss. Miraculously, Lieutenant Bush survived and was rescued by a US submarine. This early brush with death shaped his perspective on life and fueled his commitment to making a positive impact. His two crewmembers and friends were killed that day. In contrast to many of his predecessors, President Bush fully understands the dangers of sending our brave young men and women into battle and accepts full responsibility for all who do not return home to their families.
THE ENFORCER – FIRST LADY – BARBARA PIERCE BUSH
Some say behind every great man stands a strong woman; his marriage to Barbara Pierce Bush created a partnership that spanned more than seven decades. Her influence was immeasurable, contributing significantly to his success and providing a solid foundation for their family as a loving wife of 73 years. Barbara was a devoted mother and advocate for literacy. She complemented her husband’s ambitions with her brand of grace and strength. Her impact on the Bush family and the nation is a testament to the importance of a robust and supportive partner. Without Barbara Pierce Bush, I doubt George H.W. Bush would have been elected President.
EARNED HIS WEALTH
The call to serve his country persisted, leading Bush into politics. Unlike many politicians who make their fortune because they are politicians, President Bush built a successful business and then returned to serve his country.
IMPRESSIVE RESUME
I saw on the news today that Dwayne The Rock Johnson is being encouraged to run for President. Unfortunately, too many people without the necessary competencies run for and are sometimes elected President.
In addition to business experience, George Bush’s government roles included serving as a Congressman, Ambassador to the United Nations, Head of the U.S. Liaison Office in China, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and Vice President of the United States under Ronald Reagan. These roles highlighted his versatility, adaptability, and dedication to public service.
UNBELIEVABLE FRIENDSHIP
One of the most remarkable aspects of President Bush’s legacy was his unlikely friendship with President Bill Clinton—the same Bill Clinton who defeated President Bush in his 1992 presidential reelection campaign. Despite a bitter campaign, the two men formed a genuine bond rooted in shared values and a mutual commitment to public service. This friendship transcended political party lines. President Clinton joked with the Bush family; he was the brother from another mother.
HE CHERISHED HIS FAMILY
George Bush epitomized the values of love for country and family. He cherished these titles best: Son, Husband, Dad, and Granddad.
REAL MEN CRY
George Bush and others showed me real men do indeed cry. In reflecting on President George H.W. Bush’s life, I find inspiration in his resilience, humility, and dedication to family and country. His legacy is a guiding light, reminding us that authentic leadership is forged through service, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to the greater good.
Thank you for your service, President George H.W. Bush. Rest in Peace.
