“Use my life as an example” – Nate Thurmond once encouraged aspiring professional athletes to get a GOOD EDUCATION”. – A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}
I celebrate ACHIEVEMENT EVERY DAY! When I discover role models, I do not see skin color, age, religion, sex, attractiveness (ok, I like beautiful ladies), or other nonessentials. I love learning from inspirational people that inspire me to drop MY EXCUSES and DO IT! Role models who stretch my ambitions and make me reach for the impossible.
There is dignity in achievement and success—in becoming a great factor in civilization.” Carter G. Woodson.
I hope you will share these short articles; perhaps a few people will be curious to learn more.

TWO LESSONS LEARNED

- To achieve your Financial Freedom, educate yourself. Education is acquiring knowledge, skills, values, and understanding through various formal or informal methods, such as schooling, training, or self-learning. Its purpose is to empower individuals to develop their potential, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to society.
- ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP PLAN!

“Thurmond finished a degree before turning pro in 1963 and becoming an NBA legend.” – A RAINBOW OF ROLE MODELS {WEDNESDAY SERIES}
“Most NBA players today forgo a college degree to pursue their NBA dreams. However, that wasn’t the case decades ago. Nate Thurmond was an example of a star who finished a degree before entering the NBA in 1963.
In 2002, the rebounding genius was asked to give advice to young people aspiring to become professional athletes. The first thing he suggested was to think about their education, too.
“I would tell them not to think that just because they have the desire, they will automatically become a professional sports figure,” he told Ernest Beyl. “I would tell them to think in terms of acquiring a good education, too. Use my life as an example. When I was in grade school, it was accepted in our family that I would go to college. My parents didn’t have that opportunity.”
TURNING PRO EARLY

At the time of the interview, several players went to the NBA straight out of high school. 1995 Kevin Garnett blazed a trail for the prep-to-pro hopefuls, becoming the first high school draftee since Moses Malone and Bill Willoughby in 1975.
Starting from 1995 until 2005, when the league began to require draft applicants to be 19 years or older and at least one year removed from HS, there was a high school draftee each year. The 2001 class saw five such players, with three of them selected in the top four (Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, and Eddy Curry.) That probably prompted “Nate the Great” to urge future NBA players to value their education.
Interestingly, not even the prohibition of NBA draftees jumping directly from high school has stopped players from forgoing a college degree, with many stars today a product of the one-and-done system. Not that it’s a bad thing because it has allowed players to chase their dreams and financially support themselves and their families at an early age.
Thurmond’s sentiment was valid, of course, even if it was an easier choice for him and his peers to stay in college for multiple years. For those who are curious, the Bowling Green State University product held a sociology degree. While it’s unclear if his college education directly influenced his famous BBQ business in San Francisco, it showcases the diversity of his interests and achievements.
In addition, sociology seems like one of the go-to courses for many hoopsters. Some of the most notable players who also majored in it include Steve Nash, Alonzo Mourning, Mitch Richmond, and Larry Johnson.”

THE POWER OF EDUCATION
In today’s NBA, less than 19% of players complete their college degrees. Unfortunately, many professional athletes encounter financial difficulties after retirement. Root causes of these challenges: extravagant spending, limited financial literacy, risky investments, and lifestyle adjustments upon leaving the league. Like other Americans, athletes must pursue further education, not necessarily a four-year degree. They can boost their financial literacy, ultimately reducing the number facing financial challenges despite earning millions during their careers.
