When I think of inventors, I visualize people like Thomas Edison, Ford, Rockefeller, and Elon Musk. Notice that all the inventors I quickly think of are white males.
I started this Role Models blog to demonstrate the diversity of inventors and other role models, including trailblazing women whose contributions laid the foundation for modern technological advancements. Unfortunately, many diverse role models’ names and accomplishments are not known. One such woman is Tabitha Babbitt, a Shaker inventor whose ingenuity improved the productivity of woodwork by one hundredfold! Tabitha Babbitt designed and built the first circular saw in 1810.

Tabitha Babbitt, a member of the Shaker religious community in Massachusetts, lived in a world governed by tradition. The Shakers were known for their simple lifestyle and innovative spirit.
