Holding Nvidia Stock Sometimes Felt Like Riding The Starship Enterprise With Kirk Yelling “Scotty, More Power!”

Back in 2016, I initiated a position in Nvidia Corporation (NVDA). The decision was the culmination of years of observation, analysis, and belief in the company’s leadership and vision. Here’s how I broke it down then, and why that conviction has only strengthened today.
🔍 Styron’s Investment Philosophy
I invest in Businesses, NOT tickers. I look For Companies That Dominate and Demonstrate:
- Exceptional Leadership: Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s co-founder and CEO, had impressed me long before 2016. I had read his annual letters for years and watched countless interviews. Huang doesn’t just lead—he rescues. Nvidia faced existential threats more than once, and Jensen’s strategic pivots kept the company solvent, visionary, and competitive. This echoes the early turbulence of giants like Apple and Microsoft: great brands often walk through fire before becoming household names.
- Long-Term Product Demand: Nvidia’s products serve markets with expanding demand—gaming, high-performance computing, autonomous vehicles, and most crucially, artificial intelligence. I believed then, and still do, that their core offerings will remain indispensable for decades.
- Market Leadership: In 2016, Nvidia led the sales volume among its competitors. That dominance didn’t happen by accident—it was earned through engineering excellence and strategic foresight.
- Aggressive R&D Investment: The company outspent its competitors by two to one in research and development, enabling it to leapfrog competitors with faster and more efficient product launches. Their engineers weren’t just iterating, but driving those warp engines! They were innovating ahead of the curve.
📈 Club-Wide Commitment and Growth
In 2022, I pitched Nvidia to the Crimson Investment Club and recommended a collective buy. The pitch was rooted in the same fundamentals—and driven by Nvidia’s growing role in AI, data centers, and edge computing. The club voted to invest, and we saw strong early performance.
A year later, after reevaluating financials and strategic positioning, I recommended an additional allocation. As of August 1, 2025, our collective return stands at approximately +306%, a testament to both Nvidia’s execution and our shared discipline.

We recently convened to review our position. The consensus? Hold. Here’s why:
- AI Infrastructure Dominance: Nvidia is now the backbone of modern AI systems, from training models to deploying them at scale. Their GPUs are the warp engines of the AI revolution.
- Software Ecosystem Moat: Through platforms like CUDA and partnerships across academia and enterprise, Nvidia doesn’t just sell chips—it enables ecosystems.
- Global Expansion and Strategic Alliances: Their growing presence in automotive, healthcare, and robotics reflects horizontal growth rarely matched in tech.
In short: Nvidia isn’t just riding the AI wave—they built the surfboard, designed the wetsuit, and trained the lifeguards.

- In mid-2016, NVDA traded around $2.63 per share (adjusted for splits)2.
- As of August 2025, NVDA is trading at approximately $173.72.

- That’s a 6,500%+ gain over 9 years
