MY ROADMAP TO RETIREMENT – SECURING MY FINANCIAL FREEDOM!
- HAVE FUN ON YOUR JOURNEY: You get one life; make the most of it and have fun. Don’t take yourself too seriously; learn to laugh at your mistakes.
- FAMILY: I strive to be a better family member starting with being a good son, brother, and father. This means listening and helping when needed. No questions, no judgment!
- INVEST IN SELF: I struggled with public speaking and took Dale Carnegie to improve my skills. Then, practice, practice, practice! Any investment in yourself will not only help you in your personal life but also lead to career advancement and tremendous financial success. Finally, invest in yourself by building your financial literacy. You can do this by reading books, taking courses, and watching educational videos on platforms like YouTube. This knowledge will empower you to make informed investment decisions, resulting in greater returns and a secure financial future.
- S&P 500 ETF: One investment opportunity that should be on everyone’s radar is the S&P 500 ETF. This exchange-traded fund tracks the performance of the top 500 companies in the United States, providing investors with a diversified and low-cost way to invest in the stock market. Unfortunately, most people lose money picking individual stocks.
- MATCH YOUR EMPLOYER’S 401K MATCH: If your employer offers a 401(k) match, do your best to contribute enough to meet that match. For example, if your company matches dollar-for-dollar the first 6% of your paycheck, you’d want to contribute at least 6% to get that full match and gradually increase your contributions over time. NEVER, EVER touch the money in your 401(k) if you change jobs. Leave it where it is, or roll it into an IRA account to avoid penalties and taxes.
- ROTH IRA: Even if you have a 401(k), adding an IRA can broaden your investment choices and help you save more. With a Roth IRA, savers pay taxes upfront by contributing after-tax dollars. That means the withdrawals they take during retirement are TAX-FREE if the account has been open for at least five years). Roth IRAs are a smart choice for those who expect to be in a lower tax bracket today than when they retire.
- SAVE FREE/BONUS CASH: Anytime you receive additional income, such as a signing or annual bonus, invest the money. Investing in the S&P 500, Mutual funds, or ETFs will build wealth over the years.
- REAL ESTATE INVESTMENTS: Investing in rental properties can significantly diversify your portfolio and build passive income. Consider paying extra towards principal to pay off your mortgage loans sooner and save on interest. I converted my first home into a rental unit. Over the decades, I purchased additional investment properties, turning those into retirement income.
- EMBRACE FRUGALITY: The book “The Millionaire Next Door” highlights that most U.S. millionaires are frugal. Instead of trying to impress others, focus on investing your hard-earned money in real estate or other profitable investments.
- NEVER BUY MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD! Real estate agents may calculate the maximum loan you can afford. Consider YOUR finances and NEVER overspend. Finding the few agents who prioritize your interests, not their commission, is essential.
- CHOOSE YOUR SPOUSE CAREFULLY! Warren Buffett says choosing a spouse is the most critical decision ever. Marrying someone who shares your values and who you can grow with is crucial. Being with someone intelligent and supportive will make life easier and more fulfilling. TRUST ME! Spend more time deciding on a mate versus a car. You can replace a stupid car!
- LONG-TERM APPROACH: Warren Buffett recommends a long-term approach. Don’t try to get rich quickly by gambling on risky investments. Instead, be patient and focus on building a portfolio that will grow over time.
- FLUSH BAD INVESTMENTS FASTER THAN YOU FLUSH #2: Every investor makes mistakes; the smart ones minimize losses! Prayer is good; pray for the brains to sell your losing investment!
- SURROUND YOURSELF WITH WINNERS: Associate with people who build you up and challenge you to grow and learn. The people we surround ourselves with have a significant impact on our lives. Avoid associating with people who bring us down and harm our lives.
