YES – YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOUR BIG DREAMS
I used to have a home brag wall that displayed college diplomas and professional certifications. After some time, it bored me and provided little motivation. I took it down because I am concerned too many people are willing to go into six figures worth of debt to get a degree I not only never heard of, but has the job prospects of a cook with the nickname “Burnt”.
Here are some unusual but real college majors you can spend your hard-earned money on or even worse go into debt.
- Comedy – {If you need a four-year degree to be a stand-up comic- YOU AIN’T FUNNY!}
- Peace Studies {At least the military might hire you if you major in war.}
- Viticulture and enology– {I’m clueless and refuse to look it up.}
- Decision sciences– {Must be when you are always confused. Right? Maybe? I don’t know!}
- Popular Culture {Come on! We have Facebook, Instagram, and other boring social media that will tell you MORE about our culture than you EVER want to know.}
- Floral Management. {Surprised this is a degree. But at least you can get a job.}
- Studio Arts, Fine Art, and last but not least Performing Arts {Solution- Get a real job then go see the arts as much as you desire. That was my parent’s GREAT advice about photography!}
- Gender Studies– {I will get in trouble for this, but I think there are two.}
- Disruption– {Disruption of what? WTF (Fruitcake people- clean up your mouth)}
- Dance – {I am a black man that cannot dance! It has come close to getting me kicked out of my race!. It never occurred to me to spend six figures to get better!}
- How Butterflies Mate {I made this one up. For a low fee of $19,000.00, I will mail you this degree! WARNING- You will not get a job!}
EDUCATION DESPERATELY NEEDS A REDESIGN
I used college education to find employment, advance my career, and achieve FINANCIAL FREEDOM. I graduated with very employable/marketable degrees! Too many young people and their parents are falling for the propaganda everyone needs a college degree and it is logical to go into $200,000 of debt to get a degree in BS {NOT- Bachelor of Science}
Whole Foods CEO John Mackey: Store Managers Could Be Making Well Over $100,000, WITHOUT a College Degree.
Why Companies Need to Rethink the Value of a College Degree
“The need for lifelong learning may fundamentally change our long-held views of higher education. Last year, Infosys started to work with community colleges to create a career pathway for more people to become part of the digital workforce. When the pandemic hit hard and limited H1-B visas, Kumar planned to meet their current and future needs by fueling a new way to fill the skills gap. Over the past year, Infosys has hired hundreds of employees from community colleges for digital backbone jobs, which it combines with apprenticeships. And they plan to hire THOUSANDS more in the years ahead. Kumar points out that the switch from focusing on degrees to skills also means that every company needs to become a learning organization. Companies are built for addressing consumers, not to address the need for employees to constantly reskill.”
MY MOTIVATOR WALLS!
WALL #1 – MY FAMILY
In 2020, I heard or read the word racist too many times. If every time someone disagrees with you, it results in name-calling, your words become meaningless.
My immediate family members lived in horrible racist times including Jim Crow and Lynching. Still, they not only survived but became successful entrepreneurs. Their stories and success continue to inspire and motivate me!

From left to right, these pictures include my great grandparents who owned and operated a successful restaurant in the late 1800s. My grandparents operated and owned their own 300+ acre farm businesses and my parents were leaders in the educational system.

WALL #2 – “GOAT” – MUHAMMAD ALI

During a time of racism and discrimination, Muhammad Ali stood proud and proclaimed “I’m BLACK, PROUD, AND THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD CHAMPION”.
I heard LOUD AND CLEAR – I CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING IF I WORK HARD!

Two weeks ago, my brother and I guest lectured at Tulane University. The primary reason we were asked are because of the Strong Role Models and Motivators on my walls.
Our Introduction:
Bill and Styron Powers grew up attending segregated and UNEQUAL schools in rural NC. Their hometown had a population of hundreds of thousands of chickens and still lays claim to the world’s largest frying pan. The two primary jobs in their town – farming and working in chicken processing plants. Both back-breaking, hard work, for low pay.
Their parents, a Principal and Teacher, raised them with the understanding education was mandatory and critical for their future goals. The brothers graduated with seven college degrees. They both rose to the VP level working in Fortune 100 firms. But the title they cherish is Dad! Both have beautiful, intelligent daughters.
CONCLUSION
I successfully used education to achieve financial freedom and my dreams. I encourage that you use what works best for you. If you love auto mechanics follow that dream. You dream of being a doctor, swing for that fence. NEVER EVER let others define you. Last but not least find your motivators! Always keep them close, in your mind and your heart! SUCCEED!
You can be ANYTHING BY DOING THE WORK! MAKE YOUR DREAMS YUGEEEE!
